Radical NY! The Downtown NY Art Scene: 1974-84 : AMOA Exhibition Identity

Radical NY is a traveling art exhibition chronicling the rise of the Downtown NY art scene, from 1974-84. Multimedia works by artists ranging from Haring and Basquiat to Richard Hell and Blondie tell the story of a community that, in ten short years, transformed from a maligned slum to the epicenter of the art world, redefining New York and changing contemporary art forever.

Our first challenge was to develop an identity that communicated this rags-to-riches phenomenon while referencing the exhibit's aesthetic, and the second was to build a teaser campaign to pique interest in the upcoming show.

The solution is a stark, iconic logo featuring only the name of the exhibit, which was stenciled in non-permanent tempera paint and spray chalk around downtown Austin and run (without any supporting information) in area newspapers and magazines. In the weeks leading up to the opening more information will be incrementally added to the advertisements until all of the opening information is revealed.
